The older I get, the more I believe in this: we can’t do it alone. Whether you’re building a career, moving to a new country, or chasing a dream, the people around you shape your journey more than anything else.
When I moved abroad, I thought my success would depend on my skills, my experience, my drive. And yes, those matter. But the real game-changer? The people who had my back. I’d suggest having a good look at who your support system really is. Who’s there to celebrate your successes? Who can you lean on when you need that extra shoulder? And, just as importantly, who leaves you feeling drained instead of supported? Reevaluate friendships—both the new and the old.
Why Your Support System Matters
They lift you up when self-doubt kicks in. Because there will be moments you wonder if you made the right choice.
They give perspective. When you’re deep in the details, they help you zoom out and see the bigger picture.
They remind you who you are. Especially when you’re in a new environment that challenges your identity.
Support Systems in an International Life
Living abroad makes your support system even more crucial. You’re not just navigating a new job or city—you’re building a whole new life. The time zone differences, the cultural adjustments, the distance from family… they all hit harder without people who truly see you.
That’s why it’s important to be intentional about the people you keep close. Surround yourself with those who celebrate your wins, challenge you to grow, and stick around through the messy parts.
How to Build and Nurture Yours
Stay connected to old friends. They hold your history, and that’s priceless.
Invest in local connections. Join communities, attend events, and be open to new friendships.
Give as much as you receive. A strong support system is a two-way street.
Be honest about your needs. People can’t support you if they don’t know what you’re going through.
At the end of the day, success isn’t just about what you can do—it’s about what we can do for each other. So keep your circle strong. Uplift them, let them uplift you, and remember: no matter where in the world you are, you never have to go through it alone.
